What is ASTM

From the toy in a child’s hand to the air and spacecraft overhead, ASTM helps everyone have confidence in the things they buy and use.

Formed in 1898, ASTM International is a global leader in the development and delivery of voluntary consensus standards. Over 12,500 ASTM standards covering more than 90 different industry sectors operate globally. Defined and set by us, they ensure quality, safety, and compliance to improve the lives of millions every day.

ASTM International: Connecting the Dots

As one of the world's largest and most established standards creating organizations, we work across political and geographical borders, disciplines and industries. Our attention to detail takes a world view.

More than 30,000 members from across 150 countries work together in ASTM committees and subcommittees to create and maintain these standards. Every committee is responsible for engaging a cross section of interests in the development process. These stakeholders may include product designers and developers, engineers, manufacturers, retailers, third-party testing labs, government bodies/regulators, consumers and consumer representatives, and others. Our rigorous approach assures that standards are developed in an open, fair, and balanced system that gives equal weight to the needs of all interested parties and that a standard is approved only when consensus has been achieved and due process has been demonstrated.
